Storage across Basel and getting into the city

Many travellers arriving in Basel do so hours before a hotel or holiday rental will let them in, with no obvious place to put a suitcase.

The main rail hub does have a staffed left-luggage desk, while several of the city’s museums will only look after bags of a certain size. Some will not let you bring more than a small handbag inside at all, so checking the rules before you set off is worth the time. The city sits where Switzerland, France, and Germany meet, which can be handy to know when planning a cross-border arrival or departure. With Stasher, you can store bags from €1.49 per bag per day.

⁣Local hosts include cafés and local shops. Every booking comes with the Stasher Guarantee, which protects your bags up to €12,000. Stasher storage in Basel can be booked through the website or app.⁣

Luggage storage at Basel station and the airport

Basel SBB station provides official luggage storage on the first basement level. It takes items up to 23 kg for as long as a month, at CHF 6–16 per day or CHF 120 for a fixed monthly rate.

The station itself is the main departure point for intercity trains to Zurich, Bern, Lausanne, and Lucerne, plus regional S-Bahn lines to Frick, Liestal, Delémont, Riehen, and Lörrach. From EuroAirport, bus line 50 runs directly to Basel SBB in about 20 minutes. To reach German long-distance trains, transfer at the station to tram line 2 for Basel Badischer Bahnhof. If you're heading into France instead, bus line 11 from the airport connects to Saint-Louis SNCF for trains to Mulhouse, Colmar, Sélestat, and Strasbourg.

Museum bag rules and exploring with luggage

Kunstmuseum Basel doesn't allow bulky items, large bags, or luggage into exhibition rooms, and any bag must be no larger than DIN A4. Fondation Beyeler sends large bags and umbrellas to the cloakroom, while small handbags up to DIN A4 carried close to the body can stay with you. Museum Tinguely requires backpacks, bags over A4, and other luggage to be left in the cloakroom.

Historisches Museum Basel goes a step further with lockers for suitcases, travel bags, and backpacks, permitting only handbags up to 30 x 21 x 10 cm inside. On the TNW network you can carry hand luggage free of charge so long as it's easily portable and doesn't obstruct other passengers. High boarding platforms are being rolled out across the tram and bus network, which makes stepping on with luggage or a stroller easier. From Basel SBB, trams 8, 10, or 11 get you to Marktplatz in the city centre.
