Absolutely fantastic! Didn't even know it was possible to leave your bags at drop off points until I was googling to see if there were lockers at the train station. Smasher, easy to remember, simple- and I mean simple- to book, no over-asking of personal info, not bothering me with 'creating an account' just a simple purchase of a ticket, then I get an address and ticket number. PERFECT. The people at the place we used were wonderful! SO friendly and helpful, it felt like friends were looking after our bags... and no fear they would get lost, a very lovely personal service, and at a reasonable price.

Service spot was easy to find thanks to the photo provided. It was close enough and the owner was too kind to arrange a taxi to aeroport for us! Overall impression is very good!

The location was convenient, only a few steps away from the Vatican, and the service there was good. It’s a tour office, which is nice because you can buy skip-the-line tickets to get into the Vatican, the Colosseum, to Pompeii, etc. The problem, and that’s the reason for the lower review, was that the Stasher website said the location would be open until 6 PM, where in reality we were informed by the lady at the drop off location that they would close at 4 PM. We got there at about noon, so we had enough time to see the Vatican. The lady told us the she had informed Stasher many times about their actual closing time but Stasher just never updated the information online. She actually called Stasher while we were there and told them again. So if you can live with a closing time of 4 PM, this is a great place. I just think Stasher needs to get their act together.

Storage and bag rules at the Vatican

Vatican City sits as a landlocked sovereign city-state entirely enclosed within Rome, and nearly everyone arriving there has the same practical question: what to do with a suitcase or daypack that's too big to carry around.

The Vatican Museums don't allow suitcases, large bags, or rucksacks bigger than 40 x 35 x 15 cm into the exhibition spaces, but they provide a free cloakroom to hold anything unsuitable for the galleries. Whatever you leave there must be collected the same day before the museum closes, so a late-afternoon visit still means reclaiming your things before you leave.

St. Peter's Basilica itself has no cloakroom or luggage storage inside, and visitors are advised not to bring large bags at all.

However, a free deposit area for prohibited items, including luggage and large bags, is available to the right of the Basilica's façade at ground floor level, and it is also where bags must be left before a Vatican Scavi visit, since large bags and luggage are prohibited there. With Stasher, you can store bags from €1.49 per bag a day at 20+ locations near the Vatican.

Getting to the Vatican with luggage

The nearest metro stop to the Vatican is Ottaviano, on Line A, and from there it's about a 10-minute walk to the Vatican Museums entrance. A single BIT transit ticket costs €1.50 and covers 100 minutes across metro, bus, and tram services, which is plenty for the journey from central Rome.

If you're arriving by regional train, San Pietro Train Station is managed by RFI and served by Trenitalia train services. It serves regional lines to Roma Termini, Civitavecchia, Bracciano, Cesano di Roma, Grosseto, Pisa Centrale, and Viterbo Porta Fiorentina.

The Vatican Museums can be reached from either Ottaviano or Cipro stations on Metro Line A. Cipro station offers an alternative nearby stop for reaching the Vatican Museums.

Nearby sights and their own bag rules

Castel Sant'Angelo draws visitors for its layered history as an imperial mausoleum, papal fortress, and political prison, plus the terrace views over Rome. There is no cloakroom or luggage storage available at Castel Sant'Angelo.

The Vatican Museums close on Sundays except the last Sunday of each month, plus several public holidays including January 1 and 6, May 1, and December 25 and 26. Visitors must leave the exhibition halls 30 minutes before closing. A standard full ticket costs €20.00 without online booking, while children aged 7–18 and students pay €10.00; adding skip-the-line entry online brings a €5.00 booking fee.

You can visit Castel Sant'Angelo Tuesday to Sunday from 9:00 to 19:30, with final entry at 18:30. St. Peter's Basilica is open daily from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., with last entry by 7:15 p.m.
