Luggage storage and bag rules at the Barbican

If you're heading to a concert, exhibition or film at the Barbican, it's worth knowing that the Centre itself runs a cloakroom rather than sending you off-site with your things.

Suitcases and large bags aren't allowed inside the venues, so the free cloakroom on the Stalls floor at Level -1 is the place to leave them before a performance. There's no clear-bag rule, but only one reasonably-sized handbag per person may be taken inside auditoria, with a recommended size of no larger than 32cm(w) x 18cm(l) x 22cm(h).

The main cloakroom opens 90 minutes before an event and stays open until 30 minutes after it ends on performance days. During exhibition hours, a second cloakroom operates outside the Art Gallery on Level 3.

Getting to the Barbican with luggage

Barbican Underground station sits on the Circle, Hammersmith & City and Metropolitan lines. Moorgate is another practical approach: it's seven minutes away on foot and adds the Northern and Elizabeth lines to your options. If you're coming by bus, the 153 bus stops on Silk Street right by the main entrance, while routes 4 and 56 drop you at Barbican Underground station instead. Milton Court is about a five-minute walk from the Barbican entrance on Silk Street.

Shakespeare's Globe keeps bag sizes down to 40cm x 35cm x 19cm, and anything bigger won't be admitted. It operates a cloakroom when possible for £2.50 per item, but it does not store luggage. London Bridge station is the closest Jubilee Line station to it, located a ten-minute walk away.

Tate Modern does not permit bags or items larger than cabin bag size — 55cm x 40cm x 20cm — inside the building. It's an eight-minute walk from Southwark or Blackfriars stations, or ten minutes from St Paul's via the Millennium Bridge. St Paul's Cathedral is served by St Paul's Underground station, which sits just 270 metres away — about three minutes on foot.
